Italy: the virtual tour

A new way to explore

Hey there. Today I was watching TV and I saw an interesting project promoted by Ministero dei beni culturali, Comune di Roma, Comune di Milano and others instituctions as Vatican Museums. This project is about exploring the most famous Italians cities, museums and monuments through a virtual tour. Beniculturali.it will show you a “travel through the Italian cultural heritage”. The project is called “Gran virtual tour” and it is a journey long all the peninsula. Let’s start!

Rome virtual tours

I found some interesting websites with pictures and information about the ancient Rome and the modern Rome. In Italyguides.it, you can see how the ancient Rome was in the past and how it is nowadays; the site will bring you in amazing places: from the Coliseum to the Roman Forum, from Piazza Navona to Spanish steps.

The Coliseum: Flavian Amphitheatre (Anfiteatro Flavio)

Coliseum was inaugurated in 80 C.E. under the reign of Vespasian’s son Emperur Titus; it is one of the most popular monuments in Rome and one of the most important in Italy (and in Europe). To have a real experience, take a virtual tour here.

Vatican Museums

Also in the Vatican Museums website you can find the virtual tour; explore the collections, the Sistine Chapel and more. The Virtual tour is a valuable alternative if you want to explore the Vatican Museums; and, let me say that sometimes is much better visit the museums on line than for real: the last time I visited the Sistine Chapel was full of turists and it was impossible to see the impressives paintings and enjoying the visit.

Paestum and Pompei

Another amazing virtual tour shows you the archeological parks of Paestum and Pompei. Paestum was a Greek colony founded on the west coast of Italy, some 80 km south of Naples. The city is also known by its original Greek name as Poseidonia; the city became an important roman colony around 3rd century B.C.E. Today it is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world due to its three excellently preserved large Greek temples.

Pompei, was an ancient city, situated near Naples; the city, along with Herculaneum, was destroyed by volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvio, in A.D. 79.

Florence: Uffizi Gallery

Visit on line one of the most famous gallery in the world: the Uffizi; one of the most important Italians museums, it is also one of the largest and best known and holds a collection of priceless works, particularly from the period of the Italian Renaissance.
